Dear Councilors of ASCVTS,

 

I would like to tell you a good news, that Professor Sanghoon Jheon, A councilor of ASCVTS and the head of Thoracic Surgery, Seoul National University, Korea suggested that he would give us a chance of a thoracic fellowship program. This is a one-year program for one thoracic surgeon every year, and he/she will be given around $ 20,000 to  participate the program by Prof. Jheon.

I would like to have your support of the program, because we are going to start the program early in the next year. Please let me know your opinion on this program.

TITLE

The Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery Thoracic Fellowship Program

 

Description

The ASCVTS Thoracic Fellowship Program was established by Asian Society for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in collaboration with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in Korea. The Fellowship is designed to train global leaders who will further promote surgical care, education and research in the field of thoracic surgery.

 

This program was initiated by Professor Jheon Sanghoon and Lee Sung Koo as their pioneering initiatives reflecting their dedication to the education of thoracic surgery, and made possible by an extremely generous donation from Mr. LIM Soo Bok, president of Kanglim Industries. The curriculum is a one-year program for promising young thoracic surgeons from throughout Asia. The program will provide the ed Fellows with exceptional opportunities to acquire extensive experience in a leading thoracic surgery center.

 

Fellowship Application Guidelines

The Fellowship will be awarded to candidates who demonstrate exceptional promise or accomplishments in advancing the future of thoracic surgery.

 

Eligibility

-A trainee or an active member of ASCVTS under the age of 40 *)

-Has formal training in thoracic surgery or in-training course

-No, or less than 6 months experience of overseas training

-Can write and speak in English

-Is recommended by the supervisor of his/her training program (who must be an active member of the ASCVTS *)

*) If he/she is not an ASCVTS member, he/she will be eligible if he/she applies to the ASCVTS at the same time.

Benefits

-One-year fellowship program in Thoracic Surgery Service at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital Participation and observation in outpatient clinics, in-patient care, surgical procedures, conferences, and training and practice in animal labs

-Training and education in VATS Participation in clinical and basic research

-Education in writing scientific papers Opportunities to visit other renowned medical centers in South Korea Annual stipend of $18,000($1,500 per month) Expenses to attend at least one international conference

Post-fellowship responsibilities

-Submit a detailed report describing his/her experience

-Present his/her research outcomes at the following annual ASCVTS conference

 

How to Apply

The candidate should send:

-A detailed curriculum vitae

-A document stating his/her back ground, goals for the fellowship and future career plans

-A letter of recommendation written by his/her supervisor who is an ASCVTS member

-Proof of the qualifications etc. listed in the c.v.

-A letter from his/her home country (with notarized English translation, if the original is not in English) indicating he/she met specialist training requirements in that country. (N.B. Proof of immunizations and medical evaluation form will be required if ed)

The proposals will be reviewed, assessed and decided on at a subsequent ASCVTS council meeting

The candidate ion is finally approved by the ASCVTS Council Meeting after he/she is elected by a working group including Prof. Jheon, Prof. Takamoto, Prof. Date, and Prof. Nakajima. We should determine the candidate by this November to start this inaugural program. 

 

If this program is approved, we will begin the recruitment of applicants by 10 September. It will be closed by the end of October, then the ion will be finished in November.

 

I would like to have your support of the program, because we are going to start the program early in the next year. Please let me know your opinion on this program.

I also ask you to recommend talented young surgeons in your department or in your country for this fellowship program.
